A TA Experience to Remember
In September 2024, I became a teacher's assistant (TA) for our special education program. I thought I would just be helping out around the classroom, like organizing, helping students with work, or doing fun group activities. What I didn’t realize was how this experience shaped me and my understanding of patience and empathy, and what it truly means to support others.
Working closely with these students has opened my eyes to the challenges and experiences they go through every single day, some things we don’t even think about on a regular basis. Some things take extra time, like communicating a need to focus on an important lesson. The biggest thing that stood out to me, though, wasn’t the struggles they faced; it was the strength they built over time.
Many of these students show up to school with determination, kindness, and a want to learn, no matter the obstacles in their way. As a TA, I learned that support isn’t just about helping students get the right answer or comforting them when upset; it’s about showing up to class, listening, and making them feel seen and heard. The little moments, like celebrating when someone wins UNO, are the moments that matter most.
Over this time, I’ve come to appreciate how important inclusion is, not just inside a classroom, but in the hallways, at lunch, in PE, and during assemblies. Everyone deserves to feel like they belong and are important to others. This amazing experience has made me a better communicator and a much more patient person. I now see value in every person, something I didn’t ever really see before. I’ve grown to give major respect to these educators and paraprofessionals. They give all their support and love to these students, and I’ve become more aware of the importance of education in all of our lives.
Being a TA has taught me how powerful kindness can be when it’s consistent. I care for each and every one of these students, and I can’t wait to see them succeed in life. If you’re considering becoming a TA for special education, do it!!! The student you’ll work with and become friends with will change your life. You don’t need to be perfect; you just need to be willing to care.
