No Straw? No Napkin? Not Even a Spork?
Since last school year, the school has been changing the utensil situation. This may sound like an idiotic thing to write about, but it’s something I’m genuinely annoyed about. Since 2023, we’ve always had a straw, a napkin, and a spork. Then, later in 2025 to early 2026, it became only a spork. Now it’s just a simple fork for the whole day, with the occasional spork guest here and there for breakfast.
I can deal with no straw, but I’d rather not drink from a messed-up carton lip that feels weird against my mouth — and what if I make a mess with the milk? There is no napkin to help clean up the liquid that just spilled all over my chin, shirt, or pants. I’d also rather not walk all the way across the lunchroom to find a napkin dispenser and grab two handfuls of napkins to help clean up the mess I created.
My friend, Cherri Franklin, had this to say: “Earlier this year, I went to get breakfast. I hungrily chose cereal. Upon checking out, I realized there were only forks. Once I sat down, I sadly ate my soup with a fork. No straw to drink the milk, either. I don’t want to put my mouth on the unsanitary outside of the cereal container, so I am left with dry cereal lying on my milk. It was a disappointing meal, without the proper utensils.”
Bring back the sporks and other original utensils! A bunch of students and I miss them. The sporks were multiuse, the napkins were convenient, and the straws just made drinking the milk easier and taste better, because you’re not getting a gross, wet carton in your mouth from the wet, soggy lip part.
