Lift Every Voice and Sing

During Eisenhower's annual Martin Luther King Jr. assembly, Mr. Greggs spoke about the people who suffered due to civil rights issues. Ruby Bridges, Emmet Till, Medgar Evers, and MLK all fought to be seen as people. Through their hardships, this world has shifted to recognize the harm we have done and remedy this crisis by carrying out the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This was a truly inspiring speech, not only because of the history surrounding MLK Day, but also because of the courage it takes to speak publicly about issues we still face today.

Accompanying Mr. Greggs, Tyler Beauchamp performed a song titled “Lift Every Voice and Sing”. Not only was this performance breathtaking, but it was also illuminating, shedding light on the hope that was held onto during these rough times. This was a historic song that addressed the desire to overcome the gloomy days when they fought to be understood and be allowed freedom.

Eisenhower's choir and orchestra also performed “I was born by the river” by Jabez. The powerful lyrics highlight the optimistic views on how the world will change, and peace will come. Many students see this day as a day off from school, but Eisenhower proves that there is more to this day than we know by spreading awareness. This day brings those whose lives were taken and altered to attention, they are not to be forgotten but to be remembered as martyrs.
