First Date Ideas

The refreshing smell of flowers, birds chirping, and a tasty beach club with pickles and onions from Jimmy John's. Share a piece of gum right after. The perfect spring date. Now what else could you do on a nice, warm day with a significant other? Just don’t be surprised when the squirrels try to crash your picnic.

Let’s say you’re feeling crafty. There are many spots here in town to take your significant other. For example, Creative Yakima down at W Lincoln Ave is a studio specializing in pottery painting, canvases, and creative workshops. There’s also the Yakima maker space. They offer sewing, ceramics, woodcraft, and electronics activities. The creative space offers a calmer environment where you and your person could take an art class and have fun!

Not feeling arts and crafts? A picnic date sounds basic, but it’s easy to add some creativity. You could go to Franklin Park or even the Arboretum, bring a blanket, pack some snacks, and fruit. A walk through the park on a sunny day sounds like the perfect date.

If you’re in the mood for a little adventure, consider exploring outdoors together. A hike up Ahtanum Ridge for sweeping views or a loop around the trails of Cowiche Canyon to enjoy the wildflowers. Maybe even bring a camera or use your phone for a nature photography challenge. Capture colors, textures, and small details you may spot. At the end of the day, cool off with a drink from a nearby café or froyo and enjoy.

First date? A sweet treat is what’ll break the ice. Ice cream, fresh-baked, or boba are perfect to share. The little bake shop down S 68th Ave has delicious pastries, including hand pies and danishes, along with excellent coffee and breakfast sandwiches. ICY TAI is another shop that serves delicious, rolled ice cream in many flavors and with many toppings, along with great boba and coffee.

There are many places you can take your significant other, even if we live in a small, dry, nothing-to-do town. You just have to be creative with what you have. And hope for a second date.
