Are IDs Really Useful?

In many schools, the use of student ID cards has become mandatory. While some view this as a security measure, others see it as a form of surveillance. Student ID cards serve an important role in maintaining safety by helping to identify who truly belongs on campus and who may be an unauthorized individual.

The intention is not to inconvenience students, but to protect them. School officials have a responsibility to ensure the safety of everyone on campus, and ID cards help prevent potential threats from individuals with harmful intentions. In today’s school environment, where safety and organization are increasingly prioritized, the use of student ID cards has become widespread.

While some students may view them as a nuisance—constantly being reminded to wear their IDs visibly in the hallways—I believe school IDs are a valuable tool that offer numerous benefits for both students and staff.

One of the primary advantages of ID cards is enhanced security. They help identify who belongs on campus and who does not, reducing the risk of unauthorized individuals entering school grounds. In emergency situations, an identification system can streamline evacuation procedures and facilitate accurate attendance tracking.

Beyond security, ID cards foster organization and a sense of belonging. Carrying a card with one’s name, grade, and photo reinforces students’ connection to the school community.

It also improves communication between teachers and students, especially in large schools where not everyone is familiar with one another.

Another benefit is access to school services. Whether entering the library, cafeteria, or boarding school transportation, a quick scan of the ID allows students to access these resources efficiently and securely—eliminating the need to carry multiple documents. While some may perceive school IDs as a form of control, when used responsibly and respectfully, their purpose is not surveillance but rather protection and facilitation of daily school life.

School IDs are more than just plastic cards with photos—they are tools that contribute to safety, organization, and identity within the school. Instead of rejecting them, we should embrace their role in creating a more efficient and secure educational environment.
