Ike vs Davis

The energy was palpable in the Eisenhower student section as the rivalry game began. Both teams came out ready to win, and you could sense the tension right away. The whole first quarter was a consistent push-and-pull, setting the tone for the game. Although both teams got close, nobody scored, and the quarter ended 0-0.

To start the second quarter strong, a tag team effort led to Eisenhower scoring first. Damien Uriah Guitterez (senior) had an interception, giving Eisenhower the ball back, extremely close to the end zone. Then, Antonio Castillo (junior) scored a touchdown. This all happened within minutes, giving us high energy and motivation. Yet, Davis soon took the lead by scoring a touchdown and making the field goal, taking the lead 6-7. On the last play of the quarter, a flag was called. This led to Davis having an extra possession and scoring a momentum-swinging touchdown. This would be the first of many bad calls. The score was 6-13 at the end of the half.

The show continued during halftime. The marching band and dance team performed, keeping spirits up, before the teams took the field to warm up.

The third quarter began with the team energized and determined. This was likely one of their best quarters, both offensively and defensively. For most of the quarter, they held a strong defensive side and had many good offensive runs. Roman Castillo (sophomore) scored another touchdown. Also, a two-point conversion by Ja’maree Graham (sophomore) boosted their spirit. By the end of the third, Eisenhower barely held their lead at 14–13.

Entering the fourth quarter, Eisenhower came out pumped with the possibility of a win. Yet, the referees decided to hand Davis the game. Several highly questionable calls, which had been happening all game,  destroyed the team’s morale and practically decided the game, allowing Davis to move essentially inches away from the end zone. Despite this, Eisenhower didn’t let it get to them, and it fueled their defense. Davis scored, but we continued to push, keeping the pressure on. With two minutes left, Davis led 20–14. This was the ending score, despite their best efforts.

There was something to celebrate, though, as this was a season high for the team with 14 points. This was a great show of strength for the team, proving they can keep their heads even in difficult situations. If it hadn’t been for some terrible calls, they definitely could have won. Keeping this in mind, they did handle the pressure well and will definitely learn from this game. Even though this is closer to the end of the season, there is a chance that this could be a turning point for the team.
