HOCO Royalty: Inside Scoop!
This year I was on the Homecoming Court. During the HOCO assembly (and even before the assembly), I was incredibly nervous and scared to go in front of almost 2,000 people.
My partner Cesar and I had only a couple of days to figure out what to do for our skit, and the first idea didn’t work because the concept and the songs didn’t go well together. It took me hours to figure out the audio we used, and then we added Gnarly at the last minute, since Cesar still wanted to do his performance and have me “interrupt” it.
The dance/skit came easier since it was so simple. He would do Gnarly; I’d walk in with the poster; he’d run out; and so forth. When it was finally time for my partner, Cesar, and me to go up, I was so nervous. My sign was even upside down, and I felt so embarrassed, but it’s okay because we ball.
When I finally got into the middle of the gym, I was, believe it or not, actually shaking and trying hard not to make eye contact. It was so awkward because I was just waiting for Cesar to run from around the OX gym and come into the main gym.
Being awkward sucks because I didn’t know what to really do but stand and wait. I can’t really just start breakdancing to “Forever” by the Little Dippers, so everyone who was criticizing me for just standing there didn’t get it.
I’m so grateful for all the support and help I got during this event. Even though I didn’t win, it was still pretty fun. At least I’m glad my partner Cesar won.
By the way, you guys aren’t getting free cake pops from me, since the deal was that he and I both had to win for you guys to actually get them. I’m glad for the opportunity and the fun I had during, and who knows, maybe I’ll run again for prom.
