Cadet Girls Soccer: Up and Coming

Photos by Erick Angles

Our Eisenhower girls soccer team has a bright future ahead of them! Last year, they made their way through the season and persevered by winning three games in a row, leading up to state. They had a tough battle the very first round of state, eventually losing to Skyline, with a close game in the first half, but ending in a loss with a score of 0-6. This year, there are many new additions to the team! The season has just kicked off, and our Cadets girls soccer team has played its first three non-league games. Miley Ramirez, a junior on the team, says, “We played University High School from Spokane, and our next game was against Mead High School from Spokane. Briana Montez has been the leading scorer with 1 goal against University. We are better than last year, I think Wenatchee and West Valley will be the toughest games.“

When I interviewed Laurel Downes, the captain of the Cadets soccer team, she said, “University is a pretty good team that we usually lose to every year, so it was a good improvement for us to tie with them this year. I was really proud of my team for doing that. I played goalie for the game against East Valley, and they didn’t score any goals, and neither did we, but I think our performance in that game was a great improvement from our last opponents, Mead High School. I’m extremely proud of the girls this year, and as being the only senior on varsity, it gets difficult for me to manage the team by myself. It can get lonely sometimes, but having such amazing teammates by my side supporting me means so much to me. I’m just so glad that they come ready to put in work and effort every day. They’re all great girls, and I love them all.” The next game will be against Eastmont High School; this game will be the soccer team's first opponent in the Big 9 conference of Washington this season.

With that, our Cadet Girls Soccer team's final non-league game has begun! In this match against Toppenish High School, Laurel Downes scored the only goal of the game, securing another win for our Eisenhower Girls Soccer Team!

At last, the first league game kicked off at Eastmont High School. Our Eisenhower Girls Soccer team fell short to Eastmont in a close match. In a neck-and-neck battle, our Cadets lost with a close score of 2-3. The teams were tied 3-3, Sunnyside High School and Eisenhower High School, until the Cadets defeated Sunnyside in penalty kicks. Ending in a final score of 6-5. The next game was against Davis, Eisenhower’s cross-town rivals. Our Girls Soccer team didn’t give Davis any chances in this match. Ending in a final score of 8-0, Eisenhower came home with an impressive victory. Eisenhower Girls Soccer then faced West Valley High School. This game was a nail-biter to the very end, and IKE kept up until the final moment. The result was a tied game, with a score of 2-2. Eisenhower then lost in a shootout,  finishing with a score of 5-6. Then, Eisenhower Girls Soccer kept up with Wenatchee High School, which also went to state last year. It was yet another close game, concluding in a close score of 2-3. Finally, Eisenhower will face Moses Lake High School to finish the first half of the season, and rematch all of the Big 9 Washington State Conference.

It’s safe to say, our girls soccer team has a lot to look forward to during this season. With only one senior on the team, our Cadet Girls Soccer team is a young, yet determined group of girls who continue to show immense grit and tenacity.
