Slowpitch Softball: An Underdog Season
In previous years, slowpitch has been a lesser-known sport. But this year, major waves are taking place, not just with new players but also through skill development. A new coach has also contributed to the significant growth of our softball teams. Nate Esparza guides every athlete towards their potential. He helps with everything from the tiniest fixes to big changes. Not only did he help athletes grow in their sport, but they also got a couple of wins out of it as well.
While they don’t have a ton of games, they are making the most out of what they have. By blowing out Wenatchee twice in a doubleheader, the team earned a spot in the 4A WIAA Slowpitch. They were ranked 8th, just behind some of the best teams in the league. Despite these huge wins, they later played West Valley and were put away in both games. But that didn’t stop them as a team. They picked themselves up and turned around the following week to beat our rivals down the road, Davis. With two more wins, their record is now 4-2, which is better than it has been in a long time.
A record is a big part of a team, but this team has so many different aspects to it. All the girls are incredibly kind and so optimistic. They have some of the best mentalities I have ever seen for athletes. They are always positive and lift each other up. So much so that it is almost impossible to get in your head while you’re sharing the field with them. They don’t fake it during games either; practices are an amazing time and are so much fun no matter what stress you have.
Led by Hollie Duarte as well, who brings another special element to the environment of slowpitch games. Every home game, we have a first pitch by a special education student. It is an incredible experience for the student to have and an audience to watch. Slowpitch is always looking for new players. No experience required or restrictions. Slowpitch is an awesome time, and if you’re looking for some fun, this team might be what you are looking for. Please try out for any softball season, this year or next, if this sounds like fun!
