The Importance of the Offensive Line
When people think of football, they usually picture the flashy throws of a quarterback or the crazy catches made by a wide receiver. When the ball finally makes it into the end zone, all the credit is given to the man who made the catch. But what about the other players on the field? Despite being the biggest on the team, the offensive line is often overlooked and under-credited.
I interviewed junior center Roque Marichalar on his role on the field and how it impacts the game. Marichalar’s role as a center may seem small, but it can make or break a play. He’s the one who snaps the ball to the quarterback on offense and blocks the opposing team, allowing receivers and the quarterback to gain yards and score points. “A good play starts with the snap,” says Marichalar, “because it allows the quarterback to get the ball smoothly and make a play.”
The offensive line’s job isn’t over at the snap, though. The center, along with the guards and tackles on each side, blocks and protects to prevent the other team from reaching the skill players before a play can be made. It’s a position that requires strength, focus, and teamwork — every player on the line has to trust that the others will do their job. Without players like Marichalar, the offense simply cannot succeed.
Eisenhower football has had a rocky start this season, but Marichalar says their offense isn’t too bad. “There’s a lot of work to be done,” he says, “but the season isn’t over yet.” With a change in quarterbacks early in the season and the loss of several crucial seniors, Eisenhower football is rebuilding and adapting to change. Despite the challenges, Marichalar and his teammates remain determined to keep improving and finish strong
